Leeds-based icelolly.com organise Hunmanby Gap Beach Clean on August 1 to support Make Holidays Greener campaign aimed at building awareness of sustainable travel in the UK and abroad
On Thursday August 1, the icelolly.com team joined forces with volunteers from the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust on Hunmanby Gap Beach near Filey, Yorkshire, for the company’s first-ever Summer Beach Clean.
The initiative saw the UK’s largest holiday comparison and deals website play its part in ABTA and Travelife for Accommodation’s Make Holidays Greener campaign, which is designed to help foster understanding of the ways that everyone can help to protect the environment and wildlife. With ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ as its theme, the Make Holidays Greener campaign encourages holidaymakers and the trade to create better places for locals to live in and travellers to visit.
Departing Leeds by coach at 9am,the team of icelolly employees arrived at Hunmanby Gap Beach near Scarborough at 10.30am, with the collection starting at low tide just after at 11am.
The clean-up was organised for icelolly by the Waves of Waste Coordinators from the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, whose Waves of Waste programme has become a well-established fixture on the region’s coast. Luzanne Fletcher, an active member of the Trust, gave a short motivational speech on the day to illustrate the importance of beach cleans to the region and what impact rubbish can have on the environment as well as wildlife. The icelolly team were then furnished with litter pickers and reusable bags to collect the assorted refuse, where the top five types of rubbish collected were: plastic – by a significant margin, paper/cardboard, sanitary waste, material/cloth and metal.
“We’re delighted to join the industry’s efforts to Make Holidays Greener and raise awareness of how our customers can make a positive social and environmental impact while they are on holiday,” explains Richard Singer, CEO, icelolly.com. “Although we feature holiday deals to destinations around the world and the UK, icelolly takes great pride in being a Leeds-based business. In collaboration with the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, we marked National Yorkshire Day by helping to raise awareness of the simple steps we can all take to protect the environment and wildlife, whether at home or abroad.”
With the Beach Clean taking place in the height of summer, the day ended at the local Beach Cafe, where employees and volunteers came together for some well-earned refreshments including snacks, drinks and – of course – ice lollies!
